Rep. Whiteford: Health department’s student mask mandates undermine parent authority
RELEASE|September 2, 2021

State Rep. Mary Whiteford, of Casco Township, issued the following statement in response to the Allegan County Health Department’s revised local health order mandating masks for students in grades K-6:

“As a parent, grandparent and health care worker, I continue to be disappointed by the mandates made by our local health department that undermine parents’ rights to make decisions regarding their own children’s health.

“Schools have done a wonderful job with their COVID-19 mitigation efforts that have kept our children safe. I am confident in the decision-making of our school administrators and believe they should be involved in making the decision about mask mandates in their schools.

“I encourage parents to keep their children home when they are sick or show signs of possible COVID symptoms. Parents can further mitigate the virus’ spread by teaching children not to touch their face, always wash their hands after eating, and keep a safe distance from teachers and staff members at school.”
