Rep. Annette Glenn’s plan to support sexual assault survivors and bring their abusers to justice is advancing with approval from the Michigan House Judiciary Committee.

The legislation is a continuation of efforts to improve the system after shortcomings discovered during the Larry Nassar investigation in 2018. The proposals approved by the committee today would improve standards related to retention of medical records and sentencing guidelines, and provide more consequences for those who break the law.

Glenn’s measure calls for permanent loss of a medical license for someone convicted of sexual misconduct under pretext of medical treatment.

“A medical professional who violates the trust of a patient in this manner should never be allowed to practice again,” said Glenn, R-Midland. “They should never have the chance to victimize a patient or anyone else ever again.

“This legislation will fundamentally improve a system that has failed survivors and patients for years. We have a duty and an obligation to protect people and prevent such systemic failures from happening in the future.”

House Bill 4857 and other measures in the legislative package advance to the House floor for further consideration.
