State Representative Cam Cavitt today applauded a $678,366 state investment awarded to the Thunder Bay Transportation Authority to support the Montmorency County Microtransit Expansion and Regional Connections project. The effort is aimed at improving transportation options and strengthening regional mobility around Alpena.
“Reliable transportation is essential for people to get to work, attend medical appointments and take care of their families,” said Cavitt (R-Cheboygan). “In Northern Michigan, communities are often spread out, and distances can make getting around a serious challenge. Investments like this can make a real difference. This funding is a positive step toward giving residents more options and helping our communities stay connected.”
The funding, awarded through the Infrastructure Projects Authority Fund (IPAF), will help expand public transportation options for residents in Alpena and surrounding communities, making it easier for people to reach jobs, medical appointments, educational opportunities and other essential destinations.
The IPAF was established as part of Michigan’s Fiscal Year 2026 budget and road funding plan to provide dedicated funds for public transportation projects. The latest round of awards totals nearly $65 million statewide and supports efforts to address gaps in transportation access and improve connections between communities.
“People in our part of the state deserve access to dependable transportation,” Cavitt said. “I’m pleased to see this investment directed toward improving mobility in our region. We need to continue looking for practical ways to connect our communities, support our workforce and ensure that the people of Northern Michigan aren’t left behind.”
