THREE RIVERS, Mich. — On Wednesday, Republican State Rep. Steve Carra called for urgent conversations to ensure that artificial intelligence doesn’t become too powerful to control. Skeptical of the president’s support for data centers, Carra urged President Trump to use one of his greatest strengths, the art of the deal, to diplomatically address the global threat of artificial intelligence.

“It doesn’t matter who creates artificial superintelligence (ASI), the whole world is in jeopardy,” Carra said. “A major element of preserving our national security is ensuring neither people in our country nor others develop an uncontrollable machine. The president should do what he does best and work with President Xi and others to secure our future.”

Experts in the field have consistently warned about the capabilities of ASI. Carra believes their warnings should be taken seriously and is critical of branding today’s artificial intelligence as “superintelligence.”

“If artificial intelligence reaches the point of autonomous recursive self-improvement, it would be able to rapidly train itself into being a far superior intelligence, and that intelligence explosion could leave all of us in the dust,” Carra explained.

Carra called for immediate discussions to address the threat of artificial intelligence and cautioned against hyperscale data centers, which have emerged as a key concern in Michigan.

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has publicly expressed opposition to data centers despite her family’s involvement in hyperscale data center development. Jocelyn’s husband Ryan is vice president at Related Companies, owned by billionaire businessman Stephen Ross, who also owns the Miami Dolphins. Ross has been a multimillion-dollar donor to Benson and her related affairs for years. Given Related Digital and Related Companies’ partnership with OpenAI and Oracle to build a 1.4-gigawatt hyperscale data center in Saline, Carra argues Benson’s position on data centers is not aligned with the people of Michigan.

“It’s abhorrent that Jocelyn Benson acts like some type of hero listening to the people, who, regardless of political affiliation, overwhelmingly don’t want data centers, while her husband is one of the main data center developers in America,” Carra said.

Carra believes it is imperative to address the threat of ASI and prevent what he describes as elitist insiders, including Benson and her husband, from using this technology against Michigan and the nation.

“I refuse to remain silent amid this impending threat and disavow the underdeveloped and poorly conceived positions of politicians on both sides of the aisle who are advancing the artificial intelligence race and ignoring the related risks,” Carra said.
