State Rep. Karl Bohnak on Wednesday voted to eliminate the state income tax for retired state corrections officers. The bill, which passed the House with bipartisan support, comes after a prior legislative effort to eliminate state income tax for other public safety retirees errantly omitted state corrections officers.
“Let’s be clear: our corrections officers are the backbone of our judicial system, and they play a vital role in protecting and serving our communities,” said Bohnak, R-Deerton. “It brings me great satisfaction to see that there is a plan on the table to ensure that these hardworking Michiganders get to keep all the retirement benefits they undoubtedly deserve.”
House Bill 4201 would ensure retired state corrections workers can fully deduct their pensions from state income taxes.
The plan now moves to the Senate for further consideration.
