Rep. Alexander: Michigan House, President Trump prioritizing Asian carp threat
RELEASE|May 9, 2025

State Rep. Greg Alexander this week supported a House Resolution aimed at preventing a destructive invasive species from devastating a vital natural resource for Michigan, while President Donald Trump continues to prioritize delivering solutions at the federal level.

President Trump will reportedly sign a memorandum today directing his administration to take steps to keep Asian carp from entering the Great Lakes. The memorandum comes on the heels of a previous pledge and comments in the Oval Office from the president in April. The fish have been documented as little as 47 miles away from Lake Michigan.

“We are incredibly thankful for President Trump’s consistent attention to this urgent issue facing our state,” said Alexander, whose 98th House District borders Lake Huron. “Asian carp in the Great Lakes would decimate our fishing and tourism industries that provide jobs and support communities. Unfortunately, getting a remedy across the finish line has been like reeling in a lunker – it’s taken some time. The problem is we don’t have a lot of time. President Trump understands the economic and environmental stakes of the carp potentially being in our lakes, and we’ll keep pushing for solutions here in Michigan.”

Alexander this week helped approve House Resolution 77, which urges Illinois governor JB Pritzker to move forward with the Brandon Road Interbasin Project. In February, Pritzker postponed the first phase of construction due to perceived concerns about the availability of federal funding.

In 2020, Michigan and Illinois finalized an intergovernmental agreement to jointly support the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the design phase of the Brandon Road project. The plan will use layered technologies, including electric barriers, underwater sound, bubble curtains and a flushing lock to stop Asian carp from moving up further towards Lake Michigan while still allowing commercial navigation.

Asian carp reproduce quickly, eat vast amounts of organisms at the base of the food chain and quickly outcompete native fish populations. The Brandon Road Lock and Dam, located near Joliet, Ill., is a critical chokepoint in the Chicago Area Waterway System to help stop this threat.

“It’s time for Illinois and Gov. Pritzker to honor their commitments to starting this project,” Alexander said. “Our Michigan House, the governor and President Trump are all on the same page. We can’t afford political posturing or political games. It’s time to deliver to save our Great Lakes from catastrophe.”
