On Wednesday, the Michigan House of Representatives adopted a resolution introduced by State Rep. Jaime Greene (R-Richmond) urging the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) to stop allowing biological males to participate in girls’ sports. Greene’s House Resolution 40 responds to the MHSAA’s recent announcement that it would continue to allow biological males to compete in its girls’ sports divisions for the 2024-25 school year despite President Donald Trump issuing an executive order banning men from participating in female sports leagues. The resolution’s text highlights the NCAA’s immediate decision to comply with the executive order as well as how the MHSAA’s continued defiance risks injury for female athletes and threatens the safety and fairness of their competitions.
“Our caucus has always been very transparent on how we feel about this issue: men in girls’ sports endanger female athletes and undermines their opportunities,” Greene said. “As a former varsity athlete and the mother of a daughter in sports, I have benefitted from the tireless work of our mothers and grandmothers who fought to give women equal opportunities in athletics. The MHSAA’s illegal actions jeopardize both those opportunities and now, due to President Trump’s executive order, our federal funding as well. We are hoping they listen to common sense and agree to the demands in my resolution.”
House Resolution 40 passed with 66 votes, receiving substantial bipartisan support despite vocal members of the minority trying to disrupt House proceedings while the resolution was being debated on the floor. Every single other member of the House Republican Women’s Caucus sponsored the resolution along with Greene.
“One male in women’s sports is one too many,” Greene said. “This is not just a matter of compliance, but respect for the sacrifices made by the women who forged the path for female athletes and the young girls like my daughter who aspire to follow in their footsteps. They should have a fair and safe environment to engage in organized sports, and we are calling on the MHSAA to provide that kind of environment to all high school female athletes in Michigan.”
